The Challenge

The new Life Sciences faculty in York University occupies five floors in a newly constructed modern building in Toronto, Ontario. A big part of the space is dedicated for scientific research and education laboratories. As in many other projects of this type, the project required a large number of distributed receptacles and raceways along 1400-ft laboratory workstations.

York University has appointed Crossey Engineering consulting company from Toronto to specify their electric power and data cable management solution as part of this project.

A senior Consultant from Crossey Engineering explained: “The customer put together user groups that decided what kind of equipment needed to be served at each workstation and derived the power and data requirements from that. The customer liked the design of Wiremold metal raceways as they saw in other buildings of the campus”. The consultant added: “From the installer perspective, having designed and coordinated multiple custom requirements in advance into the pre-fabricated product saved so much time on site, and the factory labeling of each piece down to the exact location in the building was quite remarkable!”

The Solution

The solution that has been specified for this job was Wiremold Prewired ALDS Aluminum Raceway.
In custom raceway installations such as in this project, Crossey, the electrical consultant mentioned the following benefits of these raceways:

  • Design - The end customer liked the slick design that is consistent with the lab furniture and commonly used equipment in labs
  • Function – Robust, reliable, long-lasting raceways and power outlets
  • Flexibility - Ample of space for both Power and Data cables allowing future additions and alterations
  • Project on Schedule - The installer could complete the job at one third of the time compared to installing conventional raceways
  • Labor Saving – This Plug’n Play job similar to water pipe connections could be done faster and by less skilled staff. Besides rough-in and final connections most of the work is done at the factory.
  • Better Quality – Pre-fabricated assemblies save errors, down time and provide a more professional finish across the whole installation.
  • Space and Waste Reduction - Prefabricated raceways take less floor space and reduce waste of multiple parts packaging on site

Prewired Raceways have become standard in scientific research and educational laboratories across the country.
