Moon Hooch is a trio residing in Brooklyn, New York that plays a style of jazz that is perhaps more aligned with house music, or more broadly speaking, techno music. They started playing together in New York subway stations, and they have just released their sophomore album, This is Cave Music, which may be a reference to their earlier days playing in those stations in NYC.
When I listen to this album my initial thought is to, well, dance and dance hard. Their style of music transcends age and genre appeal, as a young or mature person is able to find and hear everything from Coltrane to LCD Soundsystem and even dub step in their brand of music. This is why everyone needs to gives this album a listen. Most of the songs are instrumentals and no group currently out sounds like these young musicians.
I'm not sure at what point “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music became associated with Christmas music, but I’m not complaining. Raised on musicals, with a healthy built-in appreciation for the incomparable Julie Andrews, this song has a permanent place in my heart. And the new version recorded by Kelly Clarkson for her holiday album, Wrapped in Red, is a nice jazzy take on the classic tune. I’m not a frequent listener of Ms. Clarkson, but her vocal range and power are indisputable and are used here for a bit of December delight.
