Legrand Data Communications and Fiber Mountain™: A Worthwhile Partnership (for many reasons)

A few months ago, Legrand  announced a partnership with Fiber Mountain, Inc., the Glass Core™ Company and provider of transformative software-defined networking (SDN) managed fiber connectivity for enterprise and colocation data centers.


This partnership allows Legrand to offer the Intelligent Cross Connect, providing our customers with a software-managed fiber connectivity layer with Legrand’s extensive range of fiber cabling and connectivity solutions.


The Intelligent Cross Connect provides a virtual connectivity fabric that enables dynamic layer 1 network switching, which, when used in conjunction with switch and router networks, provides the highest level of network control.


We’re already integrating the Intelligent Cross Connect into our Connected Infrastructure solutions to deliver dynamic and managed fiber connections to complement Legrand’s current data center offerings.

Safely supplying low voltage power over twisted pair communication cabling has existed since the earliest forms of cabled communication. In earlier days automated central offices supplied ring voltages of 30V + 15V via 1 or 2 pairs to residential or business land line telephones. More recently we progressed from data signaling voltages of 5V or less, to PoE power piggybacking over the same twisted 4 pair structured cabling in almost all commercial building communication cabling infrastructure. Did you know that there is a new focus on the cabling bundle sizes?

With the upcoming ratification of the IEEE 802.3BT as a 4-Pair PoE standard, a new focus is being placed on the cabling bundle sizes and the potential increase in temperatures that the cabling may experience with higher power loads and bundled together .  When multiple cables and cords are bundled together, the cables/cords most internal to larger bundles are not able to dissipate as much heat as loose cables. This can cause an issue when trying to stay within the +15 degree max temperature increase guidelines recommended by TIA TSB-148 (Technical Service Bulletin) in order to maintain cable transmission performance. Tight bundling of smaller conductor cords (28 awg) should probably avoided altogether when supporting higher power Poe.
