Can the box me mounted to wood studs?
This product only has means to be supported by drywall as in an Old-Work solution.
If you have access to wood studs in pre-construction, consider using the ENP0900NA as a full solution for TV mounting which will provide more and better connectivity options for modern TV needs and will fit in a standard 16 on center stud bay.

Can I replace the outlet with a surge suppressing outlet?
The receptacle in this kit is installed in a standard gang box. You can install any receptacle in that box so long as you follow code for cable fill and receptacle amperage based on the circuit capacity.
