How do I choose the right cable reel for my application?

The best cable reel depends on your environment, power requirements, cord length needs and mounting location. Legrand offers multiple reel series designed to support everything from light-duty commercial applications to demanding industrial environments. 

What are the differences between the 800, 1000, 1200 and 1400 Series?
 

Features & Specifications

What amperage options are available?

The amperage availability is closely tied to the reel series and the gauge of the cable installed:

• 800 Series: 15 A
• 1000 Series: 15 and 20 A
• 1200 Series: 20 A
• 1400 Series: 20 A and 25 A

Legrand Cable Reels are factory-rated and should not be used at amperages above the rating shown on the reel. Always consult the specific product’s rating plate before installation to ensure it meets your equipment’s requirements.  

What cable lengths are available?

Available cable lengths vary by series:

• 800 Series: Up to 40ft.
• 1000 Series: 25ft., 35ft. or 50ft.
• 1200 Series: 25ft., 35ft. or 50ft.
• 1400 Series: 30ft., 40ft., 50ft. or 60ft.

Additional lengths and configurations may be available depending on the model selected.

Conductor Configurations: Configurations vary by the amperage and application needs of the specific reel series. 

• Number of Conductors: Reels are available in 3-conductor (standard grounding) and 4-conductor versions.
• Cable Gauges (AWG):
  • 800 Series: 12AWG/3 Conductor
  • 1000 Series: 12AWG/3 Conductor
  • 1200 Series: Supports 12, 14, and 16 AWG configurations
  • 1400 Series:  10AWG or 12AWG/ 3 or 4 Conductor

Cable Deployment: Legrand Cable Reels are also classified by how the cable is deployed. 

• 800 Series: Only in lift/drag configurations
• 1000 Series: Only lift/drag configurations
• 1200 Series: Primarily lift/drag configurations
• 1400 Series: Most versatile and supports the stretch and retrieve configurations as well as lift/drag configurations

What mounting options are available?

Many Legrand Cable Reels can be mounted to ceilings, walls and work benches. 
Select models can also be paired with an optional pivot base that allows the reel to rotate for improved cable positioning and easier operation. 

How does the retractable mechanism work?

An internal rachet mechanism allows users to pull the cord to the desired length and lock it in place. A slight pull releases the lock, allowing the cord to retract smoothly back into the reel. 

What safety features are available? 

Depending on the series, available safety features include:

• Internal locking rachet systems
• Adjustable ball stops
• Durable steel construction
• Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection on select models
• Cord management features that help reduce workplace hazards

What end-device options are available?

Available configurations include:

• Flying leads: Used for hardwiring the reel directly to a junction box or specific piece of equipment
• Tri-tap outlets: Provides three standard outlets at the end of the cable for basic power expansion
• Quad receptacle boxes: A durable, four-outlet box often used in industrial workstations
• Single receptacles: A simple, single-outlet end for dedicated equipment power
• Locking receptacles: Designed to prevent accidental disconnection, these are ideal for high-vibration environments or critical power needs

Are replacement cords available?

While many Legrand Cable Reels are designed for years of maintenance-free service, certain components can be replaced if they become worn or damaged. 

• Availability: Replacement cord assemblies and specific service parts (such as brushes, springs or rachet components) are typically available for select industrial models, such as the 1200 and 1400 series. 
• Series 1000: These units are factory-sealed for safety (especially those in line with GFCIs) and may have more limited field-replaceable options compared to the larger industrial series. 

Are custom configurations available?

Depending on project requirements, various cord lengths, outlet configurations and mounting options may be available. Contact your Legrand representative for assistance with product selection. 

Installation & Maintenance

Can the cable reels be hardwired?

Yes. Certain models are available with flying leads that allow hardwired installation. Refer to the product specifications for the selected model. 

Do the cable reels require routine maintenance? 

Legrand Cable Reels are designed for long service life with minimal maintenance. Periodic inspection of cords, connectors and mounting hardware is recommended as part of standard facility maintenance practices. 

Can the cable reels be mounted in any orientation?

Installation requirements vary by model. Always follow the installation instructions provided with the product to confirm approved mounting methods and orientations. 
 

Environmental & Application Questions

Can the cable reels be used outdoors?

Certain models are designed for outdoor or washdown environments. The 1400 Series is designed for demanding environments and features a NEMA 4-rated enclosure suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. 

Are the cable reels suitable for industrial environments?

Yes. The 1200 and 1400 Series are ideal for industrial applications where durability, environmental protection and long-term performance are critical. 

Can the cable reels be used in data centers?

Yes. Legrand Cable Reels can provide temporary and/or convenient access to power for maintenance, commissioning and service activities while keeping aisles and work areas organized. 

What is the difference between Lift, Drag, Stretch and Retrieve application types?

Lift & Drag Applications: These are the most common configurations for commercial and light industrial environments where the reel is mounted in a fixed position.

• Lift: The reel is mounted in a stationary position, typically on a ceiling or overhead support. The cable is extended vertically, and the reel is designed to retract the cable plus the weight of any attached accessories (like a quad or tri-tap). 
• Drag: The reel is mounted on a stationary object, but the cable is pulled out horizontally. The reel is required to drag the cable over a surface, such as a floor or workbench, to reach the work area. 

Stretch & Retrieve Applications: This configuration is typically reserved for heavy-duty industrial series, such as the 1400 Series. 

• Stretch: The reel is mounted on a stationary object while the cable is attached to a moving piece of equipment (like a crane, hoist or moving machine). The cable is supported by the equipment or a cable tray as it moves, “stretching” the cable along the travel path. 
• Retrieve: Similar to stretch, but the reel is mounted directly onto the moving equipment. The reel travels with the machine and retrieves the cable from a stationary power source as it moves back toward the anchor point.

What NEMA ratings are available?

NEMA ratings vary by series and model. The 1400 Series offers a NEMA 4 enclosure designed to help protect against water, dust and harsh environmental conditions.
